At Bean Brothers Landscaping, we believe a walkway should feel like it belongs with your home and landscape, not like it was simply added afterward. One of the first questions we ask is, “Do you like curves or straight lines?” Some homeowners prefer organic, flowing curves and a more natural or rustic appearance, while others prefer clean, straight lines for a modern, structured look. We design and install paver, natural stone, stepping stone, pea gravel, concrete, and stamped concrete walkways, allowing us to create a walkway that complements the architecture and character of your property.
Our customers’ most common choice is pavers, and for good reason. When installed properly, a paver walkway is a long-term investment that can maintain its appearance and value for years. Unlike traditional concrete, where patches and repairs are often visible, individual pavers can be removed, the underlying issue corrected, and the original pavers reinstalled. Stamped concrete can be especially difficult to repair without the repaired area standing out because matching the original color, texture, and pattern can be challenging. With pavers, underground utilities can even be accessed and the walkway put back together using the same materials. You also have tremendous flexibility with colors, patterns, borders, shapes, and styles, making pavers one of the most attractive and serviceable options available.
Here’s how we install them. We begin by excavating to the proper depth and thoroughly compacting the existing soil. We then install approximately 4 to 6 inches of #57 stone, compacting the base before adding approximately ½ to 1 inch of #78 stone, which is carefully screeded to create the setting bed for the pavers. Where site conditions allow, we extend our stone base approximately 6 to 12 inches beyond each side of the walkway to provide additional edge support and help reduce future settling and movement. Once the pavers are installed, we finish the edges with a sailor course or soldier course border when included in the design and secure the perimeter with paver edge restraints and spikes rather than a permanent concrete edge. We then sweep polymeric sand into the joints, compact the pavers, apply additional sand, and activate it with water to lock everything together. Homeowners can also choose to have their pavers sealed after the appropriate curing period for additional protection and an enhanced appearance.
