At Bean Brothers Landscaping, a patio starts with a lot more than choosing a paver. We start by asking questions. Do you like curves or straight lines? Modern or rustic? Simple and functional, or something completely different? What is your budget? Most importantly, how do you want to use the space when we are finished? A patio can be a simple place for a table and chairs, or it can become the centerpiece of your entire backyard. Understanding your vision, your property, and your budget allows us to design an outdoor living space that feels like it was always meant to be there.

Then we start looking at everything that can make the space your own. Do we need to address drainage or elevation changes before construction begins? Would you like landscape lighting, an outdoor kitchen, fire pit, fireplace, seating walls, water features, steps, retaining walls, landscaping, or irrigation incorporated into the design? What paver color, texture, pattern, and border fits your home? Do you want a sailor course or soldier course border? Sometimes the best patio is simple, clean, and functional. Just like our paver walkways, a great patio starts with what you cannot see. We excavate and compact the existing soil before installing approximately 4 to 6 inches of #57 stone, which is compacted to create a strong foundation. We then install approximately ½ to 1 inch of #78 stone and carefully screed it before laying the pavers. Where conditions allow, our base extends beyond the perimeter of the patio to provide additional edge support. We install edge restraints and spikes, apply polymeric sand, compact the finished surface, add additional sand, and activate it with water. Proper base preparation, compaction, grading, and drainage are critical to helping prevent settling and movement over time.

Pavers are our customers’ most popular patio choice because they combine beauty, durability, and serviceability. When properly installed, a paver patio can maintain its appearance and value for years. If an underground repair is ever needed or an individual area settles, pavers can be removed, the underlying problem corrected, and the original materials reinstalled. Concrete repairs are typically much more noticeable, while matching the color, texture, and pattern of an existing stamped concrete surface can be especially difficult. Pavers also give homeowners an incredible selection of colors, textures, patterns, borders, and design possibilities.
